That is such a shame! What happened?

I'd be devastated too.

But I don't know if I'd just give up. They're such a big part of my life now.

If the glass was shattered, then it didn't happen by itself. A seam could open and make a big leak, but the glass can't just shatter for no reason. I bet your heater exploded, what brand was it. Google up "exploding aquarium heaters" and see if that sounds like what happened. There was a bunch of Marine Stealth heaters that would explode blowing out the side of the tank just as you described.

This along with a heater malfunction boiling my fish is my worst nightmare. I'm really sorry.

Very sorry to hear about your loss, especially your fish stock of course.

Don't let it get you out of the hobby though, just design the perfect setup. You may be able to save your filter media and def. let us know what brand of heater you had. You may help others with this tragedy. Please tell me it wasn't an Aqueon Pro series heater...................I have 2 of them in 2 of my tanks.

Just remember you gave your fish a good life while it lasted.

It was a Vivatech 50W heater. I don't think that it caused the explosion, all the glass shattered, just in pieces!!
It was such a shock stepping in there... I really don't know what could have caused it. I don't have any other animals in the apartment, nether does anyone have a key to it.

Besides, the heater wasn't plugged in due it was broken already and always overheated the tank!!!

Really sorry for your loss rip fishies.

I have a vivatech 50W heater, never had a problem with it but now I'm really thinking about getting a new one! I Also might have the same make of tank as you, it looks the same and last year the seam went on it over night and p*** water over my bedroom floor tho thankfullly I only lost 2 shrimp. I have redone the seams seems to be grand now fingers crossed <.<

Hey mate, everyone has said it all already, but for each extra one of us who says it, "I am sorry to hear about this catastrophe. Especially as you loved the fish so much. It isn't something that happens very often though, and it would be unbelievable odds for you to have this happen again. Its obviously something you really enjoy, so don't give up. Hopefully insurance will cover any damage caused to some extent, though I am sure thats not what bothers you about this. But it might at least help fix things. When you are a bit more up to it, I am sure you will want to have another tank with more lovely fishes. Keep your chin up

Again, It wasn't the heaters fault since it wasn't plugged in. This is because it always overheated, ever since I took it out of the tank and forgot to plug it out, and burned a little hole on my dresser.

When the time comes, consider an inline heater with a canister filter. Ever since I got mine I sleep much better knowing it's not going to do bad things. I hate in-tank heaters! They never seem to work quite right. I'm eventually going to have all inline heaters for each of my tanks.

As far as the damage, my carpets smell fish and the floor is soaking wet, the building manager told me today that I might have to move.
I do have insurance, but he claimes that this was my fault and they can't do more but replace my carpets.

I cut my foot 3 times in glass, and fell on my G5 Mac Pro which fell of the stairs and now wont start. (<-- My fault...)
I never tough 60L will cause this much damage!!!

BTW, I have carpeting on wood floor. They have to pull up the #41#### wood too, so it wont stink.

Who claims it was your fault? You should be talking to the insurance adjuster directly.

They shouldn't have to pull up the wood, for Pete's sake. A wash with lemon juice should take care of any smell (or any industrial odor killer). Don't let them take advantage of you.

They won't. I still want to move, I hate my neighbor soo bad, and an other apartment became free at my friends building. It's bigger, and I only have 6 computers, 4 white boards, a desk, sofa, bed, dresser (+ my clothes), so the move would only take a day...

The problem is that I just ordered a tank from my local LFS, and it's getting shipped to my current address, but if i move, the shipping is going to take like a month!!!

OMG i am so sorry fo your loss.
I can imagine how you felt cause the same happened to my 5g betta tank and i had him for over a year and he had a great personality
I admit I cried for over a while and I would look at all his pictures all the time
