My boss told me the LFS told her that eat fishes stomach size could be judged by the size of the fish's eye. (same size)

Is that true ?? :fun:

I read that as well, also that fish dont have stomachs, the food moves straight through and they take out the nutriments as it goes, what dont get used gets dumped, the more you feed, the more they dump. di

I've heard this as well though, Fish do have stomachs. Much research has been done on Lake Victorian cichlids over the course of roughly 9 years and in most if not ALL the stomach contentes are examined as to determine what the fishes diet consist of.
Jaws, for example: where did he or she store all them people it ate? :kana:
Sorry I just copuldn't resist.

Our Puffer, Martha has eyes a little smaller than the size of a UK twenty pence piece, but can eat two jumbo prawns the size of her head in one sitting.

Our Chacachaca has eyes the size of a pinhead, but swallows food half the length of his body.

Need I go on?

It's probably true for some fish species, but not nearly all of them. What about blind cave fish? They don't even have eyes!

If my purple spotted gudgeon's stomach was as big as his eye

He usually eats foods at least 5x bigger than that :p -_- Pig :X

EDIT: Look at my avatar, compare the gudgeons eye to it's stomach

I would have to say a big NEGATIVE! To that idea. Like SirM pointed out, and my spiny eel easly downs a garden worm 1/4 of his length. Now that would have to be a big eye!

I dont think I believe the "eye" thing either........I sure wished my stomach was only as big as my eye!!!!! :D

I doubt it. However, maybe this is refering to the size of the stomach when empty. Remember that the stomach expands to a degree in order to accomodate food.

SirM, is the Chacachaca the fish (or monstery thing   ) in your avatar?

Scary.
Nope, that's a Violet Goby in my avatar (goboides peruanus) which, despite it's huge mouth & fearsome teeth is a harmless filter-feeder.
The Chacachaca is also known as the frog-mouth catfish and is a voracious predator.
Here's ours.

Trout stomachs, when inside their bodies, are bigger than their eyes. And more elongate than spherical.

And even though it's technically not a fish, I'd imagine this guy's stomach is, well, you get the point.

A-Great-White-Shark-(Carcharodon-carcharias)-with-its-mouth-wide-open-on-the-water-surface,-directly-at-the-outboard-engine.-The-dark-blue-shark-eye-and-its-mouth-are-visible-in-detail._(000000000308).jpg

It is (technicaly or otherwise) a fish... :p

Anyway, that eye thing is often told to beginners concerning fish like mollies, platies, goldfish etc The purpose is to keep them feeding only small amounts (enough to cover the eye) so they don't over-feed. It isn't true though obviously. :p Oh and about some fish not having stomachs, that's kind of true but it doesn't apply to ALL species. In certain fish the food just goes right through the digestive system.
