Hey,

I received a text from my mate today just telling me that he has bought :

1 bottlenose dolphin shark
1 "Red Striped" discus
3 gold spotted plecs
3 small "red things" (think they are red robin gouramis)
2 red tiger oscars.

This is to go with his 3 aggressive angels and gouramis that he already has in his not very well cared for, algae ridden Jewel 180.

I couldn't believe he has bought these all together. From what i have read the discus needs exellent water conditions (this is what i am building up to getting).

My questions are:

1. are these as incapatible as i think?

2. How big will the shark get?

3. Are the Oscars not really aggressive?

I tried to get him to take at least the discus back but he wouldn't. (bargain at £30 for a 4" discus!!).

Any help would be appreciated

From what i've heard about discus, if he doesn't return them soon he won't need to... they'll all be dead. They're very sensitive fish. His tank is way out of whack, not just bioload wise, but tankmate-wise, as well. Hopefully he'll do some research and decide on his own to straighten things out.

In my experience oscars are very timid fish. Yes they will eat just about anything live or not that fits in their mouth but not aggressive. They may swallow something whole but I've never seen oscars just harass other fish. That being said the oscars alone would need 100 gallons

Well that's ~48 gallon tank soo...

- Well if the plecos are what I think they are...they get to 12" each.
- Many people would say that ONE oscar needs a 75G tank
- I have no idea what "red robin gourami"s are, but hopefully they aren't all male

1. Yes they are incompatable
2. No idea what kind of shark that is, but the only reference to "dolphin shark" I found in reguards to freshwater aquariums was someone complaining that theirs had reached a size of over a foot and could no longer turn around in it's tank....
3. The Oscars will become increasing aggressive as they run out of territory space and swim room

Discus are schooling fish and really should not be kept singly...but my guess is that it's either going to be killed by another fish in the tank, or get sick and die from poor water conditions.

I think he can definitely say goodbye to the Discus for a start. He's wasting a lot of money.

Thanks for all the help guys!! I was sure the catfish grew really big!!

Well its up to him i have given him advice and told him what i think but never mind!!!! Just a shame on the fish.

Thanks

Could the dolphin shark possibley be an elephant nose fish? If so then this is also a very timid and sensitive fish and probably wont survive either, its sad for the fish that your friend will only realise this once they are dead even then he may just get more, if you can try and get him to come on forums like this and learn more about how to keep fish correctly and it may save some fishes lives.

that is a mess that is just waiting to explode.

way overstocked with a mix of very timid and aggressive fish.

The 4 discus at the LFS near me would be about $320 to $520 (about $80 to $130 each) worth of fish depending on size I'd hate to think that I was throwing that much money down the drain.

silly pet shop person selling that amount of fish and not questioning tank size and tank mates (....or not knowing that the responses were bad)

But they made a $400 or $500 sale. That's what their in business to do.

Sadly true. And when his fish die and he wants to replace them, they'll be delighted to sell him even more.
