a friend of mine gave me some of his old aquarium stuff and along with it is an old piece of bogwood. well i was looking at it and i noticed it had little purple filaments all on one side, i assumed it was old algea, i sprayed off the wood and stuck it in a new tank - 10 gallon grow out for a baby senegal - well sure enough it stood up and waves in the current just like algea, except now its brown. this piece hasnt been used in about 3 years. i think its fine but i just wanted to run it by you guys and see if anyone has any experience with this and can tell me whats up. its been a day and my senny is still bright eyed and active.

Well if its dead stuff on the wood it could rott and mess up water parameters  Keep an eye on it and test the water frequently. I would've boiled and scrubed it off first. But I'm also occasionally called paranoid :S

Is a 10 gallon big enough to grow the bichir?

ya it is dead. ill keep an eye on that. yep a 10 is good till they are about 7", this is what i have been told by beblondie (Anne) who seems to be an authority on bichirs. she's a moderator of a few bichir forums so that gives me confidence that she knows what she's talking about. it seems small to me too, he will eventually go into a 50 breeder.

oh, ok. :good: I don't know much about bichirs. Just that some can get pretty big. :)

Can you take the drift wood out and try scrubbing off the algae then putting it back?

that sounds like a good idea, scrubbing it. iv thought about just setting it aside for a while and getting a brand new piece though.

ya some polys do get pretty big (ornates for instance) mine is a senegal, the smallest of the ones sold in the hobby.

Well that's what I would have said do. Boil it and give it a good cleaning too.

I've found a stiff nail brush is best for removing algae from wood. Make sure you don't use it for anything else, though, natch............
