Is This Possibly The Worst Advice Ever!

Found this info.
I was under the impression that using a product like Cycle you had to wait a few ... As for cycle, it is like yogurt and contains live bacteria.

Found this as well lol.
Personally, I've never heard of using yogurt for constipation in fish... a 25% water change using water from my cycled, planted tank

Some do use yogurt.
Start out your bacteria by adding one spoonful of live culture yogurt per 10 gallons of water. Others prefer to use hardy fish to start the cycle.

Damm! So it could be true!! Nice! This could save us all money!! Good old pets @ home!! HEHE!

I do very much doubt it- it's like Cycle. There's nothing to keep any bacteria alive, and they're not needed in the human body, so why would they be in yogurt? It's like Cycle- some people claim it works, but it's a load of bumph.

Gotta agree with you their Feeshy. People say cycle is fantastic. Personally I think it's a load of old coffee revel.

Anything out of the fridge is useless in my view.

I don't rate that cycle either.

This sounds like a load of bull to me. Yogurt cultures do contain bacteria, though I doubt they are the right type or the right quantity for aquatics use. You are probably just as well off getting some fresh topsoil from your yard & putting it in your tank, as long as you don't have a ton of pesticides & such it couldn't do much worse.

I still don't understand why shops don't offer cycled filter media, the markup is tremendous. Bulk polyester floss is dirt cheap, a large pillow size bag can be had for a few dollars. Sell one handful for $2 and you have paid for the bag, the rest is all profit. I toss out half of a gallon bucket of used floss every week, it has been running for two or three weeks and is without a doubt cycled.

I wouldn't want lfs bacteria to be honest god knows what in there tanks with all the fish in and out.
But a good point tolak.

Just can't believe an LFS worker was saying this!!

They are about as experienced at selling fish as we are at selling sand to arabs

I was in a local dobbies today i said what price are the kullie loches (sp?) he said what

then i said i will have a albino frog he said ok show me what it is it was the only FROG in the tank

I went there a couple of months back and i remembered that i bought my Texas cichlid from there some years ago. They reccomended it to me for a 2ft tank with 2x golden severums and other acaras and dwarf species(can't remeber now).Anyway it ended up killing all the fish except the severums(which were trying to breed),they still got beat up though. What a crap shop :grr: :fun:

Is a cup of yogurt really any cheaper than a 49 cent bottle of ammonia that will cycle many tanks? I know the ammonia can be kept for years but sure wouldn't want the yogurt in the fridge for a year. Can you say science project?

I was quizzing the employee at PetSmart the other day, and I was informed that an oscar needs a 20 gallon tank when fully grown, and a common pleco needs a 30 gallon because they don't make 24 inch aquariums, and plecos can grow to 2 feet (the lovely one inch per gallon rule). Oh, and all plecos grow like this, so my BN is going to grow to 2 feet, too. Oh, and I could have 2 bala sharks in a 30 gallon, and goldfish need 5 gallons per fish.

The only questions he answered right was 'Do fish grow to the size of their tank?' (Not really, its very unhealthy to stunt them.) and 'Can you mix goldfish with tropical fish?' (He explained that goldfish were really messy and other fish couldn't handle thier messiness, so no, they should be kept seperate. Right answer, but not the explanation I was looking for...)
