Anyone know what this is, and is it available to buy? Better yet, if I found some in a freshwater stream could I use it? The photo is actually from a trout fishing site.

Looks like something similar to fissidens moss.
 
You're right! I knew it looked familiar. So, if I found a bunch in a stream, do you think I could put it in my tank?

I have tried this with something that looked a lot like christmas moss. I just gave it a good rinse and left it in dechlorinated water overnight. I tied it to a bit of bogwood and it lasted for about 3 weeks before it started to lose color. It didn't work but I didn't lose any fish in the process.

I blamed the temperature difference for my christmas moss lookalike dying off but seeing as you live in the US you might not have that problem. I unfortunately live in Northern Ireland where sunshine and heat are a myth!
 
I'm thinking if I find it in a stream it would require a fairly good current to keep it up. It will be months before I'm able to test the theory, but I'm curious. I think it's beautiful.
 
I think the temp change will kill it,
