so i did a 75% water change on Saturday, and i was able to get my water tested today. the ammonia was really high, and they recommended another water change but smaller, closer to 30%. Shady seems happy, and doesn't look like he has fin rot, but i'm still wondering about the little black specks on his tail, and what i can do to keep the ammonia down

Continue to do large water changes when the ammonia is high. You’ll need to test daily. Get your tank cycled. Use Seachem Prime to help protect from the toxicity of the ammonia. It only lasts 24 hours though and then the ammonia becomes toxic again. Use Prime with each water change. Good luck!

Ignore the shop's suggestion and change 75% of the water daily.

Their way means you leave 70% of the ammonia in the tank.
