I just fished some wood out of a river near me and was just wondering if it is safe to add into my tank. The wood feels very hollow. It was in the middle of a stream. I have watched a few videos on youtube of what to look out for. I live in the middle of no were . There are forest and river every were.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think bogwood is wood that's been sitting in a, well, bog or swamp. Driftwood is generally found in rivers, creeks, and lakes (and the ocean). I don't think it matters as far as your aquarium is concerned, but what kind of wood it is, such as oak or pine. You want to stay away from "sappy" kinds of wood like pine, and look for hardwoods such as oak.

Scrub it down well with hot water, then you'll likely need to soak it for a good long time so it will sink and lose some of its tannins, which will turn the water brown, which isn't hazardous at all but some people don't like that look.

iv used fresh apple tree in a shrimp tank with little problems (got some white mold on it but i sucked that off...) but other than that shrimp are doing fine, so's the whole tank. i wieghed it down with slate under the sand though  so it doesn't float. just be careful of pests when fishing stuff out of rivers

I have 4 pieces which are 6ft long. I have boiled it in around 300c hot water ( coal fire gets the water a lot warmer than gas boilers ) I have now pressure washed it down and now im gonna boil it again for another hour and then try and add it to my tank. The wood is very very thick. I have also watched a lot of youtube videos which say the "wrong" wood will bring you ph right down. I have a lot of testing kits here so will add the wood after this hour of boiling and then keep on doing a few water tests and will keep a eye on the ph and nitrate. I have soaked it for a hour in boiling water so far and no tannins has come out. A lot of little bubbles have come out of the wood but no tannins. The water is still fresh and clean... This is the second hour of boiling and then gonna try and add 3 of them to my tank.

P.s ill add some photos in a hour or so of the wood in the tank.

If you boil the wood it will start to decompose rather quickly. All that's needed is to pour boiling water over it.

I thought you had to boil it ? I have got it in my bath in boiling water....
So all you need to do is wash it down with hot water ? What about barch and moss etc ?
