I will be getting a half circle 30 gal. tank soon and I was sondering if the fish I wanted would all get along.

*Plan

Angelfish pair

3 balloon rams

possibly a few hatchetfish

would I be able to breed the angels and rams while they are all in the same tank, and are there any recomendations of fish that would be better than hatchet fish?

If you get 3 rams, the breeding pair will go after the single like no other. I'd get 1 pair of angelfish OR rams, as there will be aggression from the angels when they're spawning. In regards to the hatchet question, what kinds of other fish are you thinking about getting?

Personally i would go with smaller Cichlids than Angels.

Some Apisto species are fantastically colourful and most can be kept at a ratio of 1 male to 2 females. This would leave you space for a shoal of Tetra's (or similar) and maybe some Hatchet fish in a group too.

Angels will become to large for the tank and will become very aggressive if they pair and breed.

Do you really think it's too small? I was assuming by the half round that it was a marineland aquarium, which is 26 inches long, 14 inches wide, 28 inches tall, it seemed like a pretty decent size for angelfish to me  but I guess the roundness of the front has an impact on the true width

I have a breeding pair of angels in a 36 gallon along with a pair of rams, neons, flame tetras and plecos. The 36 is really too small for my veil tail but I think a breeding pair of non veil tail would be okay. A 30 gallon is a bit small for a pair of angels IMO, but maybe worth a try. My breeding pair chase some of the tetras during spawning but never bother the bolivian rams. They could care less what is happening on the ground floor of the tank. My angels spawn all the time but someone always eats the eggs probably the BN pleco.

You tank holds the extra water in its' height. At 28 inches tall it is taller than it is long. Angel fish need a tall tank, 18+ inches, ideal 24. But at only 2 feet long it is simply unfair to keep them in there. Like i said, if they pair then all hell will break loose as the other fish will have nowhere to go to hide and feel safe. This will cause stress, possibly lead to them not eating and becoming open to diseases and infections. They would probably be attacked by a breeding pair of Angels anyway, males can be horrible when protecting a spawn. Also, normal Rams would be abetter choice as they can swim better. :good:

At the end of the day though it's your tank and you do what you want to.

Well, reading these replies has killed my hopes of a south american themed tank :-( . However I probaly will try I do have one extra cycled tank if anything goes wrong. I really want to make this tank because I love balloon rams and my local pet store just got about 15 angels at 4-5 inches long in every morph

I thought it would be fine 'cause the angels hang out middle and up and the rams are shy and love caves. I might be able to get a bigger tank if 30 gal isn't enough but I will probally get the 30 gal.

You could still do a very nice SA themed tank; a nice shoal of tetras for the middle, some hatchetfish for the top and either corydoras or dwarf cichlids for the bottom.

Please, please don't get balloon rams, I'm begging you! Rams are already a very delicate fish, and that mutation really only makes things worse :/ Normal rams are beautiful enough already, but you need your water to be spot on for them to thrive. A trio of apristogrammas would be nice.

:S This has become confusing, half of you say its fine the other half says its impossible and some say give up on the angelfish and get tetras :-( I can't stand tetra.

Can everyone try to decide yes or no to my tank idea?

I suppose no, since the tank isn't long enough. you could still get rams, just not angels.

The thing is, you have to be fair to your fish. The Angels do need room to swim. Keeping them cramped up is unfair. It is also unfair for their tankmates as if the Angels breed then the other fish will have no where to escape to and will be forced to put up with constant cichlid breeding behaviour... Which no fish deserves!

Research more into what Fluttermoth said, there is no reason that you can't still have a SA tank.
