That is not a pleco at all.  That is a type of hillstream loach.

The lfs I got it from said it was a plec but I wasn't sure what type of plec
On second look it looks like a Chinese hill stream loach they sold it to me as a plec which is a bit annoying as I purchased more plecos today !

Yeah, a lot of shops sell these as 'Hong Kong plecs' or 'butterfly plecs'. Yet another reason to hate common names, they're so often completely inaccurate.

I was actually corrected by some spotty adolescent in P@H when I said, "I'd like a couple of hillstream loaches". I gave him the look, as you can imagine.

Anyway. Hillstreams need quite specialist set ups to do well. Much cooler than the average tropical tank (around 22/23°C), plus very highly oxygenated, fast flowing water. If you can't provide those sorts of conditions, I'd take it back, tbh.

Think I will, would plecos and loaches be ok together though?

Some plecs and loaches would be okay together, but's impossible to generalise, as there are so many species in each of those families.

Where about in Devon are you? (Only roughly, I don't want you posting your address! Just to see if there's anyone nearby :) )

ive seen the labelled as borneo suckers in shops before (not sure if they are the same species)

They like well oxygenated water :)

Borneo Suckers are another type of hill stream loach, to the one in the photograph. The one in the photograph looks like a Sewellia sp. "Spotted" , generally the type that the fish shop wrongly sold you is quite demanding in their requirements and people who have kept them have found they can be aggressive but usually only towards each other and mostly between males.
Borneo Suckers which are mostly Gastromyzon sp. I have found to be easy going with each other and other fish even shrimp, they also are that bit easier to care for in general.

I have decided I am definitely taking it back as it is aggressive and attacking the baby plecos just a good thing they have a cave to hide it which I actually got thinking the male pleco would breed with the female pleco which is actually a loach!
