Just brought my first ever fish tank now i'm wondering at up to £8 a kilo, the sand that pet shops sell is it just marketing, do they actually do anything to treat the sand, it just im really tempted to just get the sand from the local builder merchants, how different can it be

I presume you are in England?

If so then play sand (as in the type for kids sand pits) is the stuff you want, buy it from Argos or garden centers like homebase, alternatively Wicks kiln dried block paving sand is good too. None of these should cost more than around £3 for 20 kilos.

It will need rinsing to get the dusty particals out but so does the sand fromm the shop.

ah didnt think of that, much better deal than my pet shop thanks

oh, but ccan i just add - builders sand is very different, it is likely to contain lime /react with the water and change it's chemistry, also it has fairly coars /sharp particles in it.

lol you are quite right, but block paving sand, also known as silversand, is a very different thing. and is so fine it seems to act like water!!
