is it safe to feed my knifefish ham or beef?i want to balance his diet. i saw some videos about people feedig their black ghost knifefish what looked like ham or bacon or some sort of meat. is it safe to feed mine some? hes about 3-4 inches (sry about the size mistake on the other post) and all of his inguries (only a little shredded and a scratch on his head) has healed. hes very healthy and in very good shape. so is it safe to feed him ham?

i dont really see the point in risking it to be honest. beef is very fatty and cant be digested very well. why not just vary the diet with different prepared food stuff. my BGK goes mad for prima, bloodworms, brine shrimp and small sinking cichlid pellets. i would say that is quite a varied diet and wouldnt want to risk ham or beef when there are many different food sources available that are safe. also at 3-4 inch your fish is very small and will have a tiny mouth.

You can feed it occasionally as a rare treat, but as stated it is not really good for them and can have negative effects if it is used as a staple food. However once a month or so will not hurt a fish. One thing about ham is its high fat content, being mammal based is not very digestible by fish. It also has a high salt content. A much better option would be fish. Whatever kinda fish you want to use. I buy mine from the grocery store, but LFS sell silversides and other expensive dead fish. I just buy talapia, normally I eat most of it but toss a fillet or two in the fish food freezer. Its mostly for my caecilians, but fish chow down on it and often I have to shew them away. They never really learn that they are only on leftover patrol  .

Edit: Avoid using catfish, raw its like rubber and really oily. Jumbo shrimp work well along with fish.

prima is a fish food made by tetra. medium sized red clusters and all fish love it. ive not found one that wont eat it except big fish that arent bothered as its too small for them

Sorry to ask this but what size tank are you keeping this fish in? Although you have stated 90 gallons elsewhere, the picture in your profile doesn't look like a tank of that size.

Do you know the size in centimeters or inches for the lenght, height and width of the tank?

thank u so muchZ!

thank u! ill look for it. ps the petsmart next to toys R us is moving and they have this HUGE sale!

Which of their products is the equivalent of Tetra Prima?

Kensfish.com is also a very good place to get fish food. As far as Tetra Prima, Tetra is one of the last brands of food I feed my fish. I know a lot of people use it, but there are much better things IMO. Besides that its expensive stuff. Whatever you get just don't get flakes. Some "carnivore" pellets would be best, highish protein content.

I would think that live blood worms, live Daphnia etc would be best for your Knifefish to hunt down (with its electric gizmo lol) If you can find a good live food supplier... Otherwise, try a quality freeze dried supplier of black worms and bloodworms
