Couldn't you have them as a combined Christmas/Birthday present?
It's so refreshing to hear someone asking their parents for something like that. My eldest daughter is 14 and has decided she wants a guitar for Christmas!

I thought about getting them as a combined birthday/christmas present; but I am trying a different offer; I will shovel the deck and sidewalk all winter (which is very, very long up here)
