It's cruel if you just toss a turtle into an aquarium and make no provision for his care. If you set things up so that the turtle has a good environment than I don't see it being cruel.

i don't believe that it is cruel to keep any animal in captivity full stop. But the conditions will always determine weather it is cruel or not. any animal given appropriate conditions could be kept in capativity, for some animals (like great white sharks) no one could ever practically provide a good environment for them ergo it is cruel to keep them. But I've seen turtles in public aquariums and they seem in great condition and with loads of room. If you can provide them with as good an environment then sure why not get them. But clearly to stick them in a standard 20 gallon tank or anything like that would be cruel.
