Yeah i do weekly water changes (speaking of that i need to do one).

I would recomend one of the eheim aquaball internals as they are very good (get the best one possible) and reasonably priced.

You could keep a single f8 puffer in that, and if you provide lots of hiding places, some bbgs.

I think id rather have external than a huge internal tbh. but they are decent.
 
There are pros and cons to both. So long as the filter gives you at least 4x the tanks volume in turnover per hour, and ideally double that since adding media and a bit of use will reduce the figure dramatically, either will do the job nicely. With internal filters, you get ease of use, with externals, you get better value for money.

One other advantage with internals is adding them to smaller aquaria is often easier. Externals require spaces for pipework, and some designs just aren't amenable to that unless you actually cut the holes into the plastic hood or whatever.
