Hi folks,
The members will want to know what size tank, what fish are in it, what type of test kit (exactly) you've got, what media types are in your filter and what, if any chemicals are going in to the tank.
It helps greatly to already understand the Nitrogen Cycle and what "cycling" is all about. Are you already familiar with that or can read the pinned articles about it at the top of the "New to the Hobby" forum?
The goal of "Fish-In" cycling is to figure out a pattern of water changes (both the frequency and percentage of water changed) that will keep to two fish poisons, ammonia and nitrite(NO2), at a level of 0.25ppm or below in your tank. To know what the levels are you will need advice from the members about a good liquid-reagent based test kit and will need it soon. Fish-In cycling takes about a month (the beneficial bacteria have to build up "biofilms" on the media in the filter before they can process the poisons) to complete on average, but it varies a lot so you might get lucky! You know when its finished by seeing that the filter can keep ammonia and nitrite(NO2) at zero ppm (parts per million) for two full days without you doing any water changes.
