Hi All.

Yesterday i treated my 190L tank with interpet number 3 to get rid of the cloudyness in the water and now the water is even worse at a dark shade of brown and i can see my fish anymore.

I am planning on doing a big water change tonight but i just wanted to see if anyone else had this issue with interpet #3 and see what their solution was.

Generally speaking you should never use chemicals to 'solve' a problem. Normally it either a) Masks a problem b)Makes the problem worse c)Costs you alot of money just for the problem to return again.

I'm going to guess if the water looked 'milky' then it was a bacteria bloom you were experiencing.

How long has the tank been set up?

How did you cycle it?

What fish are in it?

When were they added and how many were added at a time?

Do you have a water test kit? If so which one and what are your water stats. We need water stats in ppm or mg per l...not just 'ok' or 'good'.

I have 2 convicts 3 angels and 4 cats in the tank at the moment doing fish in cycling with 10% changes each day so far.

After my initial post i did a big water change and im now back to where i started with the cloudyness although this does seem to be clearing slowly but surely.

Last night i did a quick test on ammo and ph and im slightly worried about the PH at the moment.

the tank is a juwel trigon 190, ammo was at .5 - 1 (cant remember units apologies for this, looking for a better test kit tonight), and ph was at 8.5 however 8.5 was the highest that this kit could detect.

I have 2 large peices of bogwood in the tank so i assumed the ph would steadily drop to an acidic level cause i plan on keeping the angels and some discus once the tank was ready.

I have never messed with PH so any advice on how to get the ph towards neutral etc or at least drop it etc would be helpful.

THanks in advance!

meaning no offence. you should not be cycling with any of those fish in tank. and that is, in my opinion, your main problem. interpet 3 is of no use, probably the opposite in fact.

you need to return all the fish you have. and either swap them for some "hardy" fish like dynos. or, better still, get rid of all your fish. then do a fishless cycle.

sorry guy, honest advice, often hurts.

I'd be so much more worried about that ammonia level than I would about the pH.

It's the ammonia which is causing the bacterial bloom (the cloudiness).

I agree with what has been said above. That's a poor fish choice for cycling a tank.
You also need to be doing much larger water changes. Ammonia levels over 0.25ppm can and will cause permemnant health damage to your fish.

Once you've got your ammonia and cycling situation sorted, THAT is when you can start thinking about your pH.
A fish will be much happier in water with 0 ammonia and nitrites and pH 8.5
Than it would in pH 7 with Ammonia and/or nitrites present.

Fish can adapt to pH. They CANNOT adapt to being poisoned.

THanks all for the help, im organizing transporting my fish to my fathers to keep them on for the time being while i get this tank sorted.
