Interfering Husband

I got home yesterday to find my husband had decided to surprise me by getting 3 bronze corys. He was obviously listening on some level but neglected to listen to the quarantine part! When I got in he had added them to the tank and was delighted with himself!!! Apparently he had just emptied the whole bag from the lfs (including the water) in. I needn't tell you I was far from happy!! I did a 50% water change straight away, is this enough? I suppose all I can do is keep a close eye and hope all is well. He said he pitied the poor fish 'cos there were 'a few dead ones in the tanks'!!!!!

I must be honest and admit that I have never quarantined fish or plants before adding to my tanks. I do acclimatise fish when adding and rinse / soak plants for a couple of hours. What would be your preferred quarantine procedure that you speak of? I guess the mention of some dead fish in the tanks has to be worrying though

Once the bag has been tipped in and left to mix for a good while, no amount of water changes are going to help if there's anything in there to be worried about. Poor chap. We men just can't win!

I don't quarantine either. I don't have the space for a QT set up, but even if I did, I still wouldn't, because I only buy fish from a place I trust. He quarantines the fish himself.

You could take them out and watch them if youre really bothered but other than water changes I don't think there's much you can do but enjoy your new corys!

again - never quarantined either (space). Slightly worrying that there was dead one's in there with them but as others have said, if you watch them closely for a few days it should be fine. Good luck

At least he tried to do something nice for you and the fish , but if the ones he baught home look healthy I wouldn't worry too much, just keep and eye on them and the other fish in case some illness did come in with them. I guess it all depends on what the other fish that where dead in the tank where and what killed them. New arrivals often keel over in pet shops just from the stresses of capture and transportation and I am sure not all pet shops LFS's drip acclimatise their latest shipments, especially when they may have had a few hundred fish arrive at once. But just to be on the safe side have some of your trusted broad spectrum medication on hand.

It doesn't matter too much if he poured the water from the bag in the tank. If you don't normally quarantine, adding the fish with a net will do it's job if the fish are sick. Also droplets from the net will always enter the water, so again, if fish are not quarantined, then it does not matter if added with a bit of LFS tank water.

I've never done it either down to space too. I can understand what your saying by the dead fish in the tank but he was trying to do something nice for u and the fish all it takes is thank you for buying me these fish but you should of quarentined them first. They'll b ok just keep an eye on them

Plenty of winning with me Rillo Boy. He thinks I'm delighted as I wouldn't hurt his feelings. I was only expressing my worry here as I was hoping my mind could be but at rest, as it has been. Doing my research here, I notice some people quarantine so my plan was to put any new fish in my smaller tank for a few weeks to ensure all is well.
I'm happy to report that since they've been added my albino's have really come to life and all six are interracting in a most entertaining manner.

Sheesh am I ever glad I ain't married to you !!! LOL. He buys you some fish and gets this treatment ! Most people in our hobby have partners who are totally disinterested. I would grab his enthusiasm and run with it. Explain the reasons (nicely) for correct introduction of fish, and encourage something that could be a mutual pleasure. Is that not what marriage should be about ? Oh, and I would hazard a guess that well over 75% of people neither have the luxury or interest in quarantining fish before adding them, so don't be so A.R.
