I currently have 6 severums, 2 gold, 2 green and 2 striped. I am currently trying to sex them, which is not very easy. 1 of the green is laying eggs every 2 weeks but so far i have no fry, got a feeling i have 2 females. I have put the 2 gold severums in a seperate tank, one is significantly bigger than the other, but after one week no sign of eggs, so im not sure about them. The two striped sevs are in a community tank and i havent really looked at them yet.

If it transpires, say i have 2 female green sevs, would it be possible to add say a male gold, and if all goes well and the eggs are fertilised, would it work? Ad if so what would they look like?

Just wondered if it was possible and if anyone has ever done/seen this before

To my knowledge, yes the colour strains will inter-breed, the fry will be of varying colours I guess. The only way they may not, is depending on the species, are they are 'normal' severums, by that I mean are there any heros severus (mouth brooding) species in there?

Im not 100% sure, as i said i have 2 golden sevs, 2 green and 2 striped, im not sure if they are heros. Is there any way to easily identify the sexes or is it best to wait and see what happens?

gold severums are a gold mutation of the green and therefore the same species of fish. Not sure about the striped but people have spent a lot of time breeding the different colour forms and it would be a shame to ruin their effort by crossing the colours back to each other.

Anal fin shape I believe is one way to sex them, the other being the facial markings, but Im never good with sexing fish.

Think ill have to wait and see how the pairs fair. Im pretty confident i have a male and female gold, but as you know Severums are very picky and may not breed. Im unsure about the greens as i have said in earlier posts, hoping the other is a male and i get fry. The striped are in a community tank and havent looked to see what they might be yet.

I was interested to see if interbreeding them would bring out some interesting colours, say between greens and golds.

Alot depends on their genes, I doubt you will get a green/gold version, the green colouration would be more dominant I would imagine.

Hmmmm might wait and see what happens. My Golds have just had a lip locking contest and what i think is the female is doing her lil ass shaking show, so thats looking promising!

Wonder if playing a bit of Barry White would help lol
