The Sheepshead Acara Laetacara curvicepsis a nice fish, but the quality of the specimens in the trade is variable. Hexamita is a problem, so avoid buying from batches of fish that display the classic symptoms: poor colour*, stringy white faeces, and pits on the face. Even with good specimens, you do want to watch the nitrate levels in the tank because these small cichlids are sensitive to nitrate levels above 20 mg/l. Regular water changes, a varied diet, and lots of oxygen will all help keep them in good health.
In general terms they're similar to angelfish or kribs in terms of compatibility. Maximum size is about 8 cm. Like a lot of acaras they don't like especially warm water; 23-25 C being about right for maintenance, and a degree or two warmer for breeding. They are difficult to sex, but males should have long extensions to their anal and dorsal fins.
Basically hardy, and tolerant of a range of water chemistry conditions; aim for pH 6-7.5, 5-15 degrees dH. Eats most things, but variety is important, so mix in some live or wet frozen foods along with the usual pellets and flake.
Cheers, Neale
*This is very variable though, and depends on mood and environment; the best colour requires a shady tank, a dark substrate, lots of plants, and preferably tannin-stained water.
