I'm So Happy!

Ok, so I come home after a very tiring day, tbh I've had the week from hell, the tank needed cleaning and for the first time ever I wasn't looking forward to it....

So I started gravel vaccing, when I spotted something out of the corner of my eye... IT WAS A TINY BABY SHRIMP!!! So I panicked, checked the bucket incase I'd sucked some up (luckily I hadn't) and I looked harder and found 3 more!!! THEY'RE SO CUTE!!!

Now, I was told my shrimp couldn't possibly be carrying eggs as amanos only breed in brackish water... well, that can't possibly be the case I KNEW she was carrying eggs there could be more than 4 (I'm guessing the fish ate some), but I daren't move stuff incase I scared/squished some of them

OMG I'm so happy right now, and they're so cute I think my head is about to explode into fluffy kittens!!

Just thought I'd share that with you guys.... please read in a high pitched girly "OMG OMG" voice hehe

maybe they can have babys in freshwater, but just need brackish to actually do the mating? so maybe she arrived ready to burst?

tbh i think tank bred shrimp prob wont care abou the salt the further down the line they get, like people who say you'll only have success with discus in 6.5, when people do it in up to 8, called evolution i guess

It's rare but not unheard of. I had some red nose shrimp that bred in freshwater - none of them survived for long though.

Good luck with them though.

They're definitely amanos?

From my research on them, amano shrimp need brackish conditions for the larvae to develop properly... eggs etc are in fresh water, larvae hatch (they don't hatch into mini adults like dwarf shrimp do), then are washed downstream into more brackish conditions, then when they fully develop into small adults they swim back upstream to fresh water again. So yes they can breed in fresh water, but the young will likely not develop properly, and that's where you'd fall down...

You got a spare tub/small tank you could set up to put them in? Then you could read up on the correct conditions and give rearing them a go... it'd make a really great journal!

well, they're about as big as one of the tail sections of big daddy amano... They're amano hybrids, so they're huge, but orange lol They're definitely formed nicely, and they're hanging around the biggest shrimp most of the time, or hiding in the moss They're so adorable! Teeny weeny little shrimp poking their little faces out of the moss I'll leave them where they are to be honest. If they're lasted this long then they'll be ok I reckon. Also, she wasn't egg carrying when i got her... so I don't know what's going on but all I know is they're adorable!!

I wasn't aware that Amanos would readily hybridise with anything? You got any more info on these willow?

errm... not really got any info other than the seller on here I bought them from. The biggest ones are an inch and a half long now ranging from deep orange to black... the smaller ones are up to an inch long, pale almost see through, with the amano dots, but also thin red stripes going down their sides. The "mummy" shrimp is just over an inch long and she's a vibrant deep orange and the babies are little versions of the huge ones (only slightly see through cos they're so small).

Putting my camera batteries on charge then I'll try and get pics. I tried to get one of one of the babies right next to a "big daddy" but my batteries died *sad face* lemme see if I have older pics of the adults on here

*edit* just measured big daddy, he's hitting 2 inches

this is a pic of them when I first got them, the pale one at the front has gone orangey black now, the one behind is has stayed roughly that orange colour...

That shrimp doesn't look like an amano... the face is wrong...

Did the seller buy them or breed them themselves?

bred them himself... eeps... what are they 4 of the others are clear with 2 very thin red lines going down their bodies (having trouble getting pics)
