I have spawning discus, but they are Albino crystals, which means there is a challenge to get the fry to attach to the light coloured bodies of the parents, rather than the big black breeding sponge filter.
I thought i'd look into different options. Then on ebay i saw a Marina S20 hang on filter. So i got it at £15 Brand New!
It is fantastic! Its like a mini sump, water goes through a few bays and then up and over the top. Its a broad output so the force of the water is low, but plenty. The worry is with a big hose sucking up the fry. But, this has a small black sponge rather than a strainer, so that shouldnt be a problem. It comes with Marina insert media which IMO is USELESS as there is no media! haha. I kept two carbon trays in for now, and filled the other two sections with ceramic nodes. There is even a flow control so that even if it was a bit intense of an output, you can reduce it.
Oh, and did i mention it is Slim. This is what Marina are selling them at. Its only an inch or so deep, so will fit behind the aquarium without pulling it forward much (or at all in my case). I want more of these! haha
