I have a spare 2ft (70 litre) tank which was going to be a nano-reef, but i'm struggling to justify the expense of setting it up at the moment, so have decided to stick with the cheaper freshwater option for now.

I'm looking for ideas for what to do with it please.

I already have an established planted community tank with koi angels, snakeskin barbs, rummy-nose tetras, black mollies, ottos, whiptail catfish and a couple of different types of corys, so i'd like something a bit different.

It will be fishless cycled of course (well, cloned really). Actually, could be an ideal opportunity for a fishless cycling experiment, if anyone has one worth me carrying out?

Inspire me.....................

Edit: My daughter had the first idea. She would like a Betta tank. Keep them coming please.

 Get the impression you are wanting more than a Betta tank!

With a spare tank that size, I would be tempted to get Dwarf Puffers. Love the little puppy dog eyes and have wanted to own them again for a long time.
Tanganikyan shell-dwellers would also be great in a tank that size and a completely different look to your planted one.

Thanks Stang1. Both great ideas, and have been added to my 'Consideration' list. :good:

Anyone else?

oh yes a shelly tank would be cute as a button

another option could be a river tank, very fast flowing sub-tropical and designed for things like weather loaches and white cloud mountain minnows which while they're common as muck i think they look lovely in a massive group of them. you could also get some filter feeder type shrimp for it.

a betta sorority is a nice compromise if your little lady has her heart set on a betta!

also you know we were discussing a new breed of filter maturers that might actually work, you could try one of those out as a fishless cycle out of interest. wordy seems to be having some signs of sucess but as there's no water test results from the first few weeks it's very hard to quantify it's sucess fully.

Another couple of good ideas. Thanks, MW. :good:

I might actually do the filter maturation fluid experiment. I've always wanted to do a fishless cycle experiment, but i've never had a spare tank to do it in. :good:

something i'd personally like to do in the future is breed Aplocheilus Lineatus, and 70L would be ideal for a small group,
and some of the colours I've seen would put most bettas to shame

2 foot tank eh... you could have a nice group of psuedomugil rainbows (blue eyes) I expecially like furcatas and gertrudae.

Thanks. Very nice fish. :good:

And I like the Panchax too. It's not a fish i've ever kept, so well worth a thought, so thanks again. :good:

I am swaying towards dwarf cichlids at the moment, but keep the suggestions coming.

Wish I had an extra tank sitting around

Did you happen to catch that article in the AGA journal a while back where the guy had several tanks, each of which tried to be true to a different habitat? Each was a like the bottom of a particular stream with same dirt, bank composition, roots rocks, plants, water and finally, fish (sounded impossible but the idea sure was cool  )

( ok, now that we're past that, no, I don't have any bright ideas... maybe another haiku?)

I thought i'd resurrect this thread as I still haven't really decided.

Keep those ideas coming! :good:
