These were brought to me this morning... (there is a male and female)... the female is (almost) bursting with roe. What are they and how do I take care of them??... The guy says he was on holliday at the coast and caught them in a river on the Natal coast.... They are currently in a bare (open) tank...What decor / landscape??... would they jump out (should I cover the tank) any advice will be appreciated.

I'm now just a little concerned as the male is not as active anymore as when I first put him into the tank....(3 hours ago) His arms are stretched out in front of him (making him almost 10" long) & he seems to be just drifting with the current... (I have some vigorous aeration in there)... Do they (shrimps in general) need a landing strip where they can rest outside of the water, or must I turn my aeration down....

Anyone keeping shrimps, please answer that, even if you cannot identify these guys.... I have absolutely no experience in keeping shrimps. (he did however react and swam away when I touched him with the net)... The female is fine and very active.

It looks to me like this guy is deteriorating, so I need advice fast!

have you fed them anything asyet as also get some thing in there that the can hold onto also some where where they can hide as they may be stressed and struggling too hold on the floor

I've just totally removed the aeration and they've now got plenty rock structions with ample tunnels to hide in.... I have not fed them, since they've only been in there just over 3.5 hours.

its hard with the pictures you post, lol. but:
Macribrachium carcunus?

I googled your info Thanks.... Macrobrachium of some sorts, but I don't think Carcinus.... Do you perhaps have hints on keeping them alive??....

cant be too specific (though i bet three fingers could). but water temp of, around 23-26c. freshwater (unless you want to start breeding). probably about 60-80L per shrimp (adult). known to be aggressive. both to each other and and to tank mates. as with many inverts, high O2 requirement. water flow seems to be "what you got". they eat, almost, anything. but an omnivores diet (25-30% protean, 3-5% fibre) should be fine.

could do with some pics (clearer if possible) of the rostrum and saddle (head and thorax from top and side). that, should, give a positive id.

Thanks for that Boboboy... I'll go try get some better photos in a minute.... & yes... the female is visibly full of eggs, so I'm going to have an attempt at breeding.

BTW... that pesky fly in your sig!!!.... I've tried a coupla times to chase it away with my hand....

the young are Platonic. but do need brackish. you are going to need a fancy filter setup to save them. mum needs moving to brackish quick time.

shhh, dont tell anyone. but i have a mark on my TFT where i tried to kill the thing. first time i saw it.

Well.... now you tell me... I've just given them an 80% water change.... I'll watch them however...

I'll be interested in your findings, reliable info is hard to come by.

They both look fine now.... I just do not like the male's extended arms composure, but he looks fine....

Oh!... Ok, The listlessness of the male is explained when my wife phoned me at work to announce that there is now an additional male in the tank  .... You know what happenned!...
