Alrighty…
HI everyone, have just discovered there is a riffle (basically Australian native counterpart to bamboo) shrimp (that was caught from the creek) in my tank. (Just to be clear- I knew it was there but didn’t actually know what the shrimp was. Long story as to why it was there). Am looking for care hep/suggestions as I have been reading and they seem pretty difficult to care for, to the extent that I am considering putting it back in the creek where I found it (or my tinesy backyard pond).
WHAT I KNOW-
- It’s peaceful and won’t eat my fish
- It’s a filter feeder and has no claws (instead has feather duster things) which means it eats particles from the water
- It likes some current (I think)
- It seems pretty jolly picky about what it does and doesn’t eat
WHAT I DON’T-
- What to feed it
- How to feed it
- Tank size
- Water parameters (ph etc)
- Whether it is social/needs a group/is fine being solo
- Basically anything about shrimp (I have never kept a shrimp in my life)
From another thread (what shrimp is this?) I know that they’ll eat crushed brine shrimp (thanks MagnumMan). I also heard about someone else that never feeds it and it eat random stuff floating in the water and just pops out sometimes (can’t remember where I read that, but I did).

) but riffle's going well! The other day I saw the tank and thought I saw a very decayed shrimp carcass and panicked but it turned out to be a molt (which I haven't experienced before) and shrimpie is still doing fine. I'm currently feeding it essence of flake (I get the flake and squish it between my fingers in water, which basically reduces it to atom-sized particles that mr/mrs/ms shrimp can eat) and seems to be happy (no stressed colours or anything!). Love him as a part of my tank and now couldn't ever get rid of him!
