We have two types of crab in our local waters and I would love to be able to identify the specific species as the Vietnamese is Ghẹ (swimming crab) for one and Cua (crab) which aren't very helpful.

Ghe: I believe it may be the popular food crab Alimasag

Ghe when cooked brings out the mottled pattern more:

Cua looks like the stereotypical crab: it is brown before cooking perhaps some sort of mud crab

I have no idea what type of crab that it.
When you say it lives in "our local waters" where do you mean?
Because I live in the USA but most on here live in the UK.

Is this a species you have in your aquarium, or just a random crab you found and want to ID?
You must provide as much detail as possible to give the best chance of receiving an answer.

Thanks,
Nick

I am in Vietnam
It is a popular food crab here that I want to keep in an aquarium so need to ID

"Ghe" is around a 4-5inch width shell
"Cua" is 6inch width shell

Hi Saltynay, how is it going, did you get that great big tank?

Re the crabs: Donya is your girl for this one, pm her, she is bound to have a few suggestions :good:

Google image search these names and see if the crabs turned up look right to you (it's hard to ID the last cooked one in particular without seeing other angles):
Charybdis feriatus
Scylla serrata

Perfect Donya thanks for the ID your a genius :D.

Seffie - Nope quit my job got pissed off with generally everything then found a job in Saigon then back tracked and hoping to go to Uni in Singapore now.
