After a visit from the LFS this weekend i saw a Cat that haven't seen before. I would have asked the staff what it was but the shop was busy and i thought i would find it after a quick google search.... Evidentally not haha

For a start it wasn't anything like i've seen before. Didn't do too much other then blend in very well with the rocks, with its brown, black and grey stiped colours. Had a huge mouth in proportion to it's body, similar to the catfish found in english ponds and lakes. A few long whiskers either end of its giant smile. I asked another customer who was next to me if knew what it was. Said he didn't know the name of it but he'd kept one before in a community tank. He said he was sure it was the reason for the dissapearence of his beloved tetra and pals. Grew to about 4" before he got rid.

I know it will be hard to get ID from that very bad description, but would love to know what it was.

Thanks

bit of a long shot on that description try talking catfish

Although they're not that colour Ime not sure if they have stress markings but a young gulper catfish or Zamora catfish

Two random guesses but Simons answer seems to fit the bill better

Bae

None of them i'm afraid. Thanks though. Will have a look through planet catfish some more

Cheers

Ey up.... Could be on too something here.... Yep! One of the bumblebee catfish i reckon.... Not quite sure which one. Will clarify next time i'm at the LFS.

Are these commonly kept fish, because i can honestly say in the past 3 years of walking round LFS's i haven't seen one. Unless i've mistake them for rocks.... :/

Cheers

no there not common because they are nocturnal. however sandy tanks with plenty of hiding spots and you should be fine as i believe they can be territorial. there sold in most bigger stores rather than local stores.

the kind of fish you can keep and not see but when you move stuff round you'll find it twice the size and full of your tetras if you keep them with them :)

Yeah, I've just read that they can eat fish up too half there own size! think I might have to plonk him on the "wish list" for a future set up.

Thanks

Which LFS did you see this in :)

Ah right not been for a while :/ I saw a tiger shovel nose in MA for crazy money didnt know if it was that you had seen.
