I Thought My Rainbows Would Pair Up For Life?

so Ive had my original male and female forever, they have made some many batches of fry. Ive raised about 75, still have 40 or so growing on in other tanks. More recently, Ive moved 2 of the fry into my big tank with the original parents to live permanently. Last week, the big colorful and now full grown fry, successfully courted his mother (lol) and they now are protecting eggs in the wiggler stage. I feel bad for the original Dad, since its always been him and the female together. I thought they paired up for life? How did this youngster come in and steal the show?
