i am at my wits end. my angel has what i think is finrot. or something like it. is mouth has been damaged so he cannot eat. and last night i noticed his fins getting smaller and rotting away. what i need to know is that if it is finrot can it be spread to my other fish in the tank? what should i use to treat the other fish as a preventative mesure? and how can i effectively euthanize my angel? i just went and looked at the tank and he is kinda tipping sideways now when he is resting. i can't get clove oil any where near me so any other suggestions. i heard of someone using those tablets that you drop in water that fizz and you drink it, i realy can't remember the name right now so if anybody knows what i'm talking about and knows the name can you post what the name is please and tell me if i can use that?

the tank is a 55 gal with 5 tiger barbs, 1oto 1rtbs, 1 male guppie and 1 angel. all water tests are normal and i will be doing a scheduled water change today or tomorrow.

thanks for your help!!!!!!

its the tiger barbs! Get rid of them.

do not kill that poor angel because your fish are ripping it apart.

GET IT SEPERATED ASAP
its the barbs 99%posotive!!!if no other fish has it its barbs move the angel it dont deserve to die as WRS said

yeah, I have a blue ram that is getting its tail bitten, but I am not going to euthanize it, I will be moving it the my 20 gallon as soon as I get a new heater for it.

I think it would be easier in your case to put the barbs in a bowl, go to the lfs or where ever and get them a 10 gallon tank or so. It will cycle very quickly because you already have your cycled, hopefully, 55 gallon tank filter, Put that in the 10 gallon, and the 10 gallon filter in the 55 for one hour. that will cycle them very quickly.

it's not the barbs. i watched the tank for hours it's placed in front of my desk and they won't go near the angel. i even set up a camera to watch the tank for a few hours a week or more ago when i noticed the top half of his mouth missing. he can't eat anymore no matter what i try (flakes, pellets, fry food etc) he just can't get a hold on anything. i had anotheer angel he died about a month ago before i got the barbs. his body started to decay too mostly it started to decay around his head. so i'm don't think is the barbs.

as much as i hatte to admit it looking at my poor angel now i think the most humane thing to do is euthanize him. i don't want to but seeing the poor thing trying to eat and swimming sideways i just don't want him to suffer!!!

i dont' have anyother tank to move him to either, or i would have so whatever it is won't spread to the other fish.

Fin nippers usually attack at night! HELLO! Tiger barbs are one the most aggressive barb, especially if not kept in large schoold, which still may not help. Just because one angel had some disease doesnt mean that they all will get it.

did you even think that they bit its mouth as well?

and you say that you dont want to but it seems that you crealy do want to put it down instead of listening about what may actually be the cause. Just because you do not see that the barbs attack the angelfish doesnt mean that they are not the cause of the fins missing.

I feel bad for you angel fish.

i can't simply go out and buy a 10 gal, where i live it will cost me at least $100. i am a student and just don't have that kind of money lying around and when i said i had the camera set up it was during the night with a night vision setting on the camera. I was doing a project that involved survallance and i wanted to test my setup plan and set it up on my tank. i did this for a few nights and to make sure that it worked i actually had to watch it through and not once did the barbs approach the angel. it's almost like the tank is seprated the angel stays to one side ( was like this before i got the other fish) and the other fish stay over on the filter side of the tank in the currents.

dispite what you might think i don't want to euthanise but the angel hasn't been able to eat for over a week i dont want to starve it to death i just wanted to help him not suffer anymore.

The angel is probably using it's mouth to defend itself, getting bit in the process. If you are not going to pull the barbs & relocate them, get a tank divider.

Fish do tend to heal remarkably well with fresh water changes, the more the better. Warmer water temps help in the healing process, if you can get the angel in a seperate tank, kick the temp to the mid 80's to 90 F. If the angel isn't eating, you can force feed a bit of brine shrimp with an eyedropper. Make sure your hands are wet, grab the fish gently, and squirt a tiny bit in it's mouth. A smaller tank helps with this also.

i can't afford to get another tank it's just not possible with rent, car, insurance, tution, food, heat, new computer to replace the one that caught fire in my house last week (scary), etc i just can't work a new tank into my budget. i really wish i could but i can't.

no one i know has a tank for him every one i know keeps cold water fish

did ya ever think of classified section to look for free tanks?

and what country do you live in btw?

Or even better, send the barbs back to where you got them.

Call your local fish store and see if they can hook you up with something - tell them what's going on and see if they have some sort of SOMETHING that you can put your angel in.

If it was me, I'd stick those crazy little barbs in a darn ice cream bucket and work on healing that beautiful angel fish. I only keep bettas, but I too can almost guarantee you that your fish is literally being eaten alive. You can't see what is going on in that tank 24/7 so you don't KNOW that it's not being attacked. And if you had another angel - that died the same way - and no one else is sick in that tank, you'd think that would be just a bit too coincidental. NO?

If you don't want to do that, ask your LFS if they would consider taking the angel off your hands. Sometimes they will take them for you, nurse them back to health, and then sell them off. IF they have room, they'll most likely take them.

I would feel horribly guilty if I were you if I decided to euthanize that poor fish. Think of all he's been through to this point, and then to go through death wondering why he had to do through all of this?

Look, do you have a bucket? Even that will do. You could give the angel a salt dip, can someone say how much salt is needed please. How long has it not eaten for? They can survive for quite a while without food. As said, the heal pretty quickly. Just look at Lucky (bettamomma's tailess wonder).

first of all the other angel did die the same way however it was over four weeks before i got the barbs. so coincendience NO it's not!!! :grr:

my local fish store will not take him, becasue the say he looks diseased i took him to the store eairler the week. they sais they would flush him but that's about it!! i didn't want to flush him 1 because i wanted to try to get him better. and 2 because you shouldn't just flush a sick fish.

i have been agonizing over this desision for over a week!!!!!!!!! :dunno:
