I have noticed on nearly all of my fish at one time or another they will get one and only one white spot on their bodies or fins that is about the size of the red light on most electronic remotes if you can picture that. It comes and goes, does not affect the fish's appetite, but does cause them to scratch a little, but not excessively, and disappears in a week or so. Then I won't see it again for a month or more. Only one fish at a time ever gets it. What the heck is it?

Sounds like ich to me, can't think what else it could be :/

The spot (it's always just one) is much larger than what people say ich looks like, and it never spreads to other fish (at least not at the same time). Maybe it's related to ich?

fungus. it happened to my honey gourami. it seemed to be getting better but then got much worse

From what I understand, fungus (in fish) is a secondary infection. It feeds off on dead skins cells that was caused by either parasites, skin damage (bites, scratches) or bacterial infections.

You could prevent fungus by keeping your water clean and treating your fish if you see skin damage. Unlike parasites and bacterial infections, a lot of people don't treat their fish if they see some minor skin damage due to nipping/biting or accidental scratching. It may look like an innocent "boo-boo", but it could get deadly when infected with fungus, which happens often if your water's dirty.

So, you are saying the fish, one at a time, are getting a fungus and that they all have the ability to cure themselves? I have never treated the tank with any medicine whatsoever. This seems ludicrous to me!!!

Re-read my post, I never said they can cure themselves from fungus.

EDIT:

I have just noticed your stock. Sounds like a lot of nipping's going on in your tank. Your fish are not compatible and the lobster will try to catch/nip/eat all of your fish.

There is no nipping in the tank. None of the fish show any signs of scuffing. You have assumed this to be true you are sorely mistaken. The lobster does not even attempt to catch any of the fish in the tank. He has not even tried to eat the one fish in the tank he could catch, the pleco.

Also, about this fungus idea. The white spot cannot be a fungus unless the fish are able to cure themselves of it. I have never treated the tank with any medication. Do you agree with this? I am beginning to doubt that there are many in this forum who truly know what they are talking about.

Edited for meanness
And a fish "curing itself" isnt an option as you seem to know. If it is a disease, parasite, fungus etc. it is probably just going through its life cycle

look buddy, youre not posting pictures or anything. its really not that easy to figure out what youre talking about when all you say is a white spot. You could be describing tons of things but we cant figure it out. You cant say that people dont know what they are talking about when you have no clue whats going on either. how about you take a picture or find a picture of a fish that has the spot similiar to yours. then we can actually have something to go off of.

wow...what started as a simple question has gotten out of control... please let me try to make a couple of points:

1) no pictures can be taken at this time since at this moment none of my fish have this mysterious white spot and two I can't find pictures of it anywhere which is why I asked the question in the first place.

2) somehow the fungus idea was brought up even though my first post stated that this spot goes away on its own and never infects more than one fish at a time.

3) once the fungus idea was mentioned, I tried to point to out that it cannot be since I have never medicated the tank.

4) I got frustrated when someone said, "Re-read my post" and they obviously hadn't read mine to start with.

5) I offended some by saying they had no clue without admitting that I didn't either...but in my world, asking a question, by default, implies that I don't know the answer.

6) I apologize for the offense...it certainly was in bad taste and I learned a lesson from it.

its alright we all make mistakes. me included.

And fungus can go away on its own. is your temperature high? this accelerates the life cycle of these kinds of things but i cant understand why you are only getting one white dot

It's as if it is a parasite that feeds for about a week once every two months...very strange...but at least it doesn't impact the fish very much at all...temp was at 80F when this was occurring...now temp is at 78F...it has been a few months since I've ssen it... maybe it died.

yeah so whatever it is its life cycle is probly accelerated. I dont know anything about external parasites though
