I Got My Bolivian Rams Today...

6 bolivian rams came in the mail today and since then i have quarantined them in a 20 gallon tank. i threw a bunch of extra aquarium ornaments (a bunch of fake plants and a clay pot) in the tank too in hopes of increasing the chances of 2 of them pairing up. i'm assuming i have a mixture of males and females but i dont really know for sure.


anyway, i eventually want to move a pair of them into my 20 gallon long community so i'm wondering how long it should take for them to pair up? and how obvious will it be that they are indeed a pair?

also, i have a trio of dwarf gouramis already in my community tank... and the male can get pretty aggressive. do you think the rams will be tough enough to hold their own?

I don't think it is easy to say how long it will take for a pair to develop. Depends on their age, stress and conditions. But be on the look out for breeding tubes (females) to develop. If they are and 1.5 inches in length, you could post photos for some of the forum members to help sex. Difficult when they are young though.

My rams then to keep totally to themselves. I don't have gouramis but think they would be okay.

I'm not familiar with breeding Bolivian Rams. I once had two which I believe may have been both male. I had them both with one Dwarf Gourami. The Gourami tends to keep himself to himself whilst the two Rams just maintained their own territory at either end of the tank.

I think pairs are more likely to form when they are more mature and have a tank to themselves (2 Bolivian Ram + other fish)

I lost one of these Rams to Callamanus worms, I'd treat your lot whilst theyre in quarentine if I were you!
