I currently have a freshwater community tank-20 gallons. It has been healthy, happy and stable for about 3 months now. I have just acquired a 75-gallon tank that I want to make saltwater. Tell me the fish that you love in your saltwater tanks. I am open to any ideas, and will start putting water in it within the week. Thanks in advance!

:hi: to TFF and in particular the salty side of life :good:

Might be better if you tell us what sort of fish you like and what your plans are for the tank, FOWLR, reef etc.

We are a demanding lot and love hearing every little detail with loads of photos

So, tell us about your fish keeping experience, your hardware and anything else us noisy lot would love

Looking forward to you starting a journel in the journel section

We are very demanding indeed  :p Even thought I don't have my salty tank yet  I personall love striped, spotted and red mandarins. As well firefish :D, oh, and porcupine & dog face puffers.

What is the name/make of the tank, like Seffie said, we are very demanding

I currently have one 20-gallon freshwater community tank. It has zebra danios, platys, cory cats, oto cats and some african dwarf frogs. I have had it going for about 4 months. I got a stellar deal on this 75 gallon tank and want to go saltwater with it.

What I like in a tank is a community that gets along well. I want it to be a reef tank: some anemones, corals and peaceful shoaling fish. I like seeing shoals a lot. I would be happy with 3 or 4 groups of fish that traveled the tank. I also really like the odd stuff. In the freshwater, I love the frogs, and I have a couple of ghost shrimp. In the saltwater, I would like to have a seahorse, a starfish, other interesting things(that are not aggressive).

The hardware for the 75 gallon tank--I bought the tank, and it came with a lot of stuff I have to sort through. It has a filtration system with a separate tank(looks like 10-15 gallons). It has a light, pumps, hoses. He said it just needed water.

That is about all I know, right now. Tomorrow I am going to dig in and see how it goes together, and start cleaning it.

you need to read up on cycling a marine tank first of all.

Then if you want a full on reef look into - lighting your gunna want halides or a lot of T5 tubes, skimmers, pumps etc

I am looking to sell my 10 marine fish - all in excellect condition, also have equipment to sell as wel - if interested let me know

welcome.

Is your tank drilled or will you be using an overflow?

I don't think you can keep a seahorse with a reef because seahorses require low flow (correct me if i'm wrong!)

Make sure the previous owner hasn't used any copper based medicines in teh tank or you will never be able to keep a reef. (copper is deadly to invertebrates.)

You will need Live rock ~1 lb/gallon or more for filtration. Some powerheads, for a reef you want upwards of 30x flow. I'm getting about 3600gph in my 90 gallon

Get a good skimmer, the other members will be happy to point you in the right direction.

You need a return pump from the 10 gallon sump you mentioned. What lighting is included? Pictures would be very helpful!

Most of all, come up with a livestock plan before you buy any equipment!

Good shoaling fish are anthias and chromis and you have room for both!

Okay, I am back. I have learned quite a bit in the past week. My 75 gallon tank is reef ready, with the drilled holes and an overflow. I have it hooked up, with the 10-gallon filter/sump, and a (very loud!) pump. As of now, my salt levels are good, pH is good, temp is good. I added live sand yesterday, live rock are next and am now looking at fish. The only lighting currently is a regular fluorescent. I haven't added the skimmer, yet. I am still debating what, if any corals or anemones I will try. I know it will take stronger lights and the skimmer.

I have looked at the chromis and the antias, as well as threadfin cardinals. I like all of them, but the chromis are my favorite. Would three small schools be too much? And, could I have a couple of clown fish in addition? The only other thing I would want is a starfish, snails, crabs and shrimp.

Thanks!

It depends which chromis you pick. If you want several shoals, i don't think it will be possible. Your best bet is blue-green chromis, because they grow to around 3inches. Instead of 3 shoals, maybe get a group of like 6 of them?

You should be able to have a pair of clowns as well as the chromis.

You will probably get a brittle star or something as a hitch hiker, but there are other starfish that you can get in a 75 gallon. I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject though.

Make sure you have a good test kit to test for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate at the very least.

Once nitrate reaches ~0 ppm, you can add your clean up crew (crabs, shrimp, snails). Then after 2 weeks or so, start adding fish. Could be more or less time depending on how much you add.
