Very handsome! I'm not good at IDs but I thought "candy canes" has a striped dorsal fin, at least the males...or is it pelvic fins? Are yours young? Maybe that shows up later?

I admit to having issues with the similar serpae tetras long ago. Semi-aggressive pretty little snots LOL. It may have been our number of them, tank size or tankmates, I don't remember anymore. Deep in my heart I know better but it's hard to get past that early experience. High body red tetras, even tiny embers, I may never be ready to keep again, scarred for life...?

I am in no way an expert, but what I’ve read and seen, a reduced black on dorsal fin or white dorsal is H. bentosi while a heavier black dorsal fin is typical of H. rosaceus. The best way to tell is a thin shadow-like vertical bar on the body right behind the gills for IDing bentosi. These are supposed to be more peaceful than the Serpae Tetras. Like I said, this group needs work. For now…..I’m gonna just enjoy them from here in my fish room recliner. They’ve already colored up nicely and had a light meal.

Those are definitely some cool looking tetras. They have great color and a nice body shape. Keeping them in QT first is a smart move, especially with new fish. I’d be interested to see your water parameters and how they behave once they settle into the main tank.

Start here, and follow through half a dozen or more newly found tetras guides from Oliver Lucanus. Brilliant stuff.

I had no idea there were so many new and unnamed species. Obviously most of us will probably never see many of these guys in our tanks. I am glad to have what I do have….especially the Red Cherry “Muzels” and Blue Eyed Congo Tets for unusual ones along with the more available Cardinal, Congo, and Diamond Tets.

Ok…..gotta share my vid of the M. bentosi (Candy Cane Tetras) with the Cardinal Tetras in the 33g long tank. These two fish get along nicely, have different levels of preference in the water, and the differing shape and color of the bentosi provide a cool complimentary contrast to the CTs. Kinda think this tank really pops now. I even replaced my resin fake wood with real driftwood as well. I do have to say real is better. It only took me tons of years to realize this.
Finally…..the original title should read HY511 …..instead of HY551. Oops
