I've just done a major clean-out of my Juwel Rekord 120, removing the filter which came with the tank (it was useless) and installing a new one (which I've actually been "phasing in" for a while now).

Anyhow, shortly after having removed the old filter casing (which was siliconed to the side of the tank) and stirring up quite a bit of muck, plus giving the substrate a good stir, load of worm-like "things" appeared.

There were literally hundreds of them floating around in the water, all seemingly dead... either that, or these worms had shed, and this is what was left? They ranged from about 8mm to around 35-40mm and were almost transparent, the larger ones of which appeared to be thicker at one end, with a sort of "jagged" appearance. They're very worm-like, long and thin, definitely not planarians.

Safe to say, it's grossed me out and despite trying to syphon most of them out, there are still a few floating around. I'm worried that if I stir up the rest of the substrate, there will be loads more hidden away somewhere!

Anyone know what they are? Do they pose a risk to the fish? Where have these things been living, growing and reproducing, and considering they all appear to be dead, should I worry?

Also, are they likely to pose any risk to humans? The closest things I've found appearance-wise are nematodes and some of them sound quite nasty...

Any help or info would be much appreciated.

i heard bout someone else having them but i dont now much about them

Anyone else got any ideas? :)

No, not hydra. You have an infestation of Planarian worms.

These little worms come in a variety of shapes and sized and appear when there is uneaten food trapped in the substrate.

Cut down on the food and vac the gravel more often and they will vanish.

They're harmless to your fish and some fish will even snack on them!

here's a few species (not to scale)

Thanks for the messages. :)

I'm not entirely convinced that they are planarian worms, which I thought were typically small and flat? They do look a bit like the worm on the right, second one down...

I also can't understand why this mass of worms (some of which, quite large) all of a sudden turned up DEAD? Where the hell have they been living, growing, reproducing and dying all this time? The fish are also totally disinterested in the remains.

I am concerned that they might be some sort of parasite, nematodes perhaps? If they were nematodes, does this mean that even though I've only found dead ones, the fish could be infected with these worms?

I had those worms
they're all dead now, i have no clue where they came from but it was probably from overfeeding, as someone mentionned. I feed a lot less now then i did when i got my tank 2 months ago and water is crystal clear all the time.

I'm really happy i managed to fix it up!

guessing I'm probally going to get razzed for this comment, but if you can't identify them, go ahead and do a parasite treatment, follow the full course, do a water change and repeat the course.
