How To Transfer Filters?

Basically I am getting rid of my Eheim 2213 external filter for a fluval U4.
How do i do this?
Because I would have to cycle the new filter, could i do this by simply putting the fluval in the tank and keeping the Eheim running for about a month, would this build up the bacteria etc that is needed?

Yeah, might take a bit longer than a month....or take the external filter media and put it into the new U4...

Transfer all old media into the new filter, if it doesn't fit, cut it up.

if your that fussed buy new filter media for the ehiem and sell it and cut up the media in the fluval. lrtting the u4 just run in the same tank will take about 3 months before it can do the bio load in its own

Why not compromise and use some old filter media from the Eheim to seed the new Fluval4? That will speed up the process considerably. I use this method with all my new filters

The best method I have found, when media cannot be simply moved over, is to treat the tank with the new filter as a cleaning bucket. I clean my established filter in the new tank and the new filter acts to remove the released materials. Since a portion of the material released during cleaning is partially the bacterial colonies, the new filter gets a nice priming of those bacteria. If I then do a fishless cycle on the new tank, I often find the new filter is ready in less than a week. I have even used this method to give a filter a jump start in an occupied tank. The end result is that I must do huge water changes for a few days but that the new filter is ready to take over in less than a week. So far, knock wood, I have not had a failure to be ready in a very short time using that method.
