How To Stop Fish Going In The Filter?

What's the best thing to use to stop my 1cm Cardinals from going down the filter inlet? I cut the toes off of a pair of tights and put those over it and tied it with an elastic band however after 24hrs I can see the flow from the filter is reducing as the tights get clogged with crap from the tank! I took the tights off and put a few elastic bands around it on there own to make the gaps smaller.

What other ideas do people have and what have people used?

How about one of those cheap £ shop sieves? Cut the mylon mesh out and use it the same as the tights. The mesh isn't so fine so it wouldn't clog up so fast but fine enough to stop the small fish going in. I've not tried it myself, it waas just my first thought...
