Theres no problem with the interpet one I use the mini ones and they work fine. So it will be fine.

I dont think you would be able to pinch enough filter material from the elite to help the new filters, whilst keeping the elite stable. So guess it'll be the normal cycling route.

If you squuezed the new sponges for the filter in some of my current tank water in a bucket would this speed it up?

Unfortunately not. There is very little beneficial bacteria in the water itself. All the helpful bacteria is held in the filter media. How well do you know the people at your lfs? If you know them well, they may be able to sell you, or give you, some mature media. Espescially if they know you are going to spend money with them to stock the tank.

hmm well they sold me a red tail shark the other day and told me it was suitable to be in a 2ft tank with a betta fish... So yeah,
