I have an 60 litre

aquarium and want to breed my sword-tails. I have one male and two female, so I suppose its a good combination. I also have a small breeding tank, which I can use for her to give birth, but my problem is, when do I know that I should move her into it?

I know about the gravid spot and all that, yes she is certainly pregnant, but what behaviour should I be looking for to show that she will give birth in the next 24-48 hours??? Any answers or recommendations would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Post a picture and we can tell you if she is near birth or not! :)

Main signs:
  • Hiding away
  • Her belly will square off (she will look like a cube)
  • Hanging around the filter/heater
  • Male chasing her
  • She is chasing other fish
  • Not eating (although this is only sometimes the case)
  • Her anal opening might look bigger than usual (to let fry out)
  • Gravid spot might get darker
Can you see what I mean, when she squares off the bottom of her belly looks flat, she looks like a cube:

There is also a thread about this topic on this forum which I found very useful when I was a beginner:

Good luck with her! :)
