I'm sure this has been covered, but I can't seem to find info.

I have a 5 gallon tank, and it seems to be loosing water quite fast. Down to 1/2 tank within about 1 month or so. Not sure if this is normal, but how do I go about topping it up properly without shocking the fish with the new water?

Thanks in advance and forgive my ignorance as I'm quite new to owning a fish.

well you should actually be changing 10-20% of the water weekly, and then replacing the water you remove. you can either siphon it out and back in with fresh, or if you are very worried about stressing the fish, and I have to do it this way for one of my very shy males, is take a cup and gently scoop out the water into a clean bucket, and then with fresh dechlorinated water use the same cup to scoop and pour the water back in.

The lose of water will be from evapouration...or you have a leak!

But as said, simply spyhon the water out and pump fresh tap water in that has been dechlorinated with a water conditioner.
