for my new aquarium i need to get the sand sorted before it gets here in a few weeks. it is 5 foot by 2 by 2. so how many kgs will i need. also which sand would people recommend. ive used proper aquarium sand and argos playsand in the past. i do prefer the aquarium sand as i find it easier to clean.

the last time when i set my 522 up i used two bags
of Argos play pit sand i think there about 15 kg each
they are £2.99 a bag

I used Unipac aquarium sand in my tank which is 5' in length, (360ltr), I bought 2X 25kg bags@ £14.99 each and ended up using about 40kg of that. There was plenty left over so the rest got used for my sons turtle tank B-)

i know the value is really good but ive put it in my parents aquarium and it seems harder to clean. it seems to grip all the poo and debri im trying to suck up.

That`s why I paid a bit more and went with the Unipac Aquarium sand. Might cost more but it`s a lot less work ;)

i can confirm roughly 30-40kg. i just put sand in a 4x1x1 and used 20kg of the argos playsand, an extra couple of kilos would have been perfect. for your tank thats twice as wide as mine i'd guess at 30-40kg.

what the best method for cleaning sand ? unfortunately ive only just found the comments in this thread about cleaning it, so am a bit concerned.

Yep, approx 40kg would be sufficient.

Cleaning sand - use a hosepipe as a syphon and hover about an inch over the surface, should pick up the debris and not the sand.

ive got a hoover for my gravel tank, will that do or do i specifically need hosepipe ?

yeah that should be ok its just the same as doing
a gravel clean except you dont let it get so far up the
cleaner before you stop it and let it drop back down

about cleaning sand..

i got 5x2x2ish tank with argos(x3) sand.. i never clean the sand. i got the flows to point the dirt to the intakes (x5)..

always looks clean unless someone had drop a torpedo..
