I keep my Bettas in 10, 15, and 20 gallon tanks and they get those big tanks all to themselves. I've always used heaters in the tanks to keep the temperature a constant 78F. I'm considering running without heaters though so I'm wondering, how many of you keep your Bettas in tanks without heaters, and what size tanks are they, and what are the lowest room temperatures you get in the winter.

Thanks in advance.

They need to be kept warm. I keep mine at 27c. I think if you were in a hot country or your house is hot it would be ok. But I'm not. My water is 20c without a heater which is no good for a Betta

I'd say it depends on location personally.

I use heaters in all my tanks, now most of the time they are not on, but i keep them in there and plugged in purely because i know what English weather is like and temps can drop very quickly

i accidentally unplugged my inline ehater one night last month, bear in mind this is summer, and the temperature dropped to 18C by 9am the next morning...

so yes, you need a heater ;)

That is mostly how mine are. Off all the time but in the winter, Texas can get cold. I read a research paper from a University studying ways to prolong the life of the Betta and they found that they will live longer in water from 74F to 76F then in higher temperature waters. I'm trying to get my Bettas to live longer. For me it's like clock work, they die at exactly 22 to 24 months. And I do everything posible to keep them as healthy as can be. I don't even use gravel in the tanks as that can add to polution. Meanwhile, my niece keeps her Bettas in little 2 gallon tanks with very little care and sometimes hers live up to 4 years. Makes me wonder what might be wrong with the water in TX. That said, I do keep the GH above 85 and the KH above 50 and the pH stable at 7.6.

Though I agree with you, my niece lives in upsate NY and keeps bettas in a little 2 gallong tank with no heater and has had two or three Bettas live up to 3, and 4 years old. Makes me wonder if that Univesity study hit on something where they found they will live a little longer in cooler water temperatures.

Heaters in all my tanks. Wouldn't and couldn't do without them.

Were I live the water is actually to hot for the Betta and I have t put ice in it before it goes into the tank

In florida it gets super hot so I only use a heater during the winter time. In fact it gets so hot that I have to have my betta in front of the a/c just to keep it between 78-80! Of course at night it occasionally gets down to 76 but shim never minded, as long as he knew he got some tasty bloodworms before bed :)
