Ok right now i have 5 fish. 3 Black Skirts and 2 Bloodfins. I would like to get a few more fish. The rule is that its 1 inch of fish for each gallon of tank. My fish at grown size are all around 2 inches so that means im maxed out. But you gotta take in consideration that i got a filter that is suppose to be in a 20 gallon tank. How many more 2 inch fish do you think i can fit? I would like 1 more bloodfin and maybe 1-2 bottom feeders like otos or cories. Any ideas would be great.

You might be able to put some bottom feeders in. I don't know any kinds of bottom feeders off the top of my head that sound good. For the most I would have 15 inch of fish prob. Don't go up to 20 inches.

oh yah!!! I wouldn't go by the 1 inch per gallon rule. Ask knucklehead how to do the base and height rule to determine how many inches of fish you should have. It's more acurate. It will also probably turn out that you can have more fish.

Honestly I throw all the fish rules out the window. There are entirely too many variables to make them useful. I stock my tanks by what feels right to me. If your unsure wether or not you have space for anymore then the answer is no. Play it safe and keep it the way it is. Or just upgrade to something bigger. As always in all my posts this is just from my experiance and opinion. ;)

I over-stock my tanks according to to the "inch per gallon" rule, but not according to my water parameters, my fish's behaviour, swimming space and all the other variables.

In my 10 gallon tank I've got a male betta, a school of 8 black neon tetras and a pair of cherry barbs (that look abour ready to spawn). There's plenty of room for everyone as tetras aren't terrific swimmers, the barbs stick to the lower level of the tank and the betta likes to sit near the top, front and look out at the humans.

I'd try to make up your schools of tetras a little more - maybe add a couple at a time until it looks about right. They will tend to clump together so don't seem crowded. Incidently, the "inch per gallon" rule refers to length of fish excluding tail so I'm not so sure you have as much fish as you imagine (and also the gallons are US gallons of course, not UK gallons).

If you want some fish that stay near the bottom of the tank and stay small, I'd recommend a pair of cherry barbs. You can add an apple snail as a waste-disposal fish. I wouldn't personally put a dwarf plec in such a small tank and ottos and corys are schooling fish.

i pretty much do the same as Anna, but the little calculator thingy up top (the third in the list) tells you a more general fishie-length than the inch-per-gallon rule. in my ten gallon (20x12x10) i can fit 16.67 inches of fish. try doing that.

since you have a strong filter, as long you do regular water changes and such, you could probably get a few more fish. i'd go with three of a small cory variety (www.planetcatfish.com is a great source site), and maybe one or two of the bloodfins. you'll just have to check your water parameters regularly to make sure your water is good. i have an overstocked tank technically, 5 mollys and four corys, but i take care of my tank so it won't become a problem. the one-inch per gallon thing is a great guideline for beginners and such, but you've caught on to fishkeeping quickly so i'm sure you can handle bending that rule now. as most of us have learned, a lot of its trial-and-error, see what works for you.

Personally I would take into account their size now, how quickly they are likely to grow and if you are planning on upgrading in the future.

Technically somepeople would say that I have an overstocked tank, based on the adult sizes of fish (including all my fry) but as my fish are all fairly small at the moment and I plan to upgrade with another tank to put the fry and a couple of others in, then I don't feel like I have overstocked too much.

Like Knucklehead said, just do what you feel comfortable with...! :D

in my 10 gallon i got 7 cories.....2 clown pleco's and 2 black neons.....and i know i could get more fish in

i also dont use the 1 inch of fish rule........i think it depends on the measurements of ur tank

my 180 litre is long deep and wide so i go by water parameters and what i think looks okay.......my fish arent strugglin for room to swim so i think they are happy

it doesnt look over crowded but it has done in the past when ive had to put extra fish in there for a day or 2

id say if i needed too i could fit a few more fishies in.....u can tell my seeing if ur tank is over stocked...well so i think anyway
