I have one in my 30 gallon...an ac 40-70 gallon, thinking putting in my old bio wheel for my filtration

One! :D I have a suggestion. Always get a filter that's a bit too big for the tank. I'm not saying hook a 600-gallon filter to your 10-gallon, but filters usually have a set gallon-size. For example, the filter I use, the brands come in models like this:

5-20 gallon model
20-40 gallon model
30-70 gallon model
50-120 gallon model
etc.

I have a 30-70 gallon model for my 30 gallon tank. If you had a 20, I'd go with the bigger one.

To sum it all up, It's better to overfilter than underfilter. :D

 I can't count them off the top of my head, I need a log to keep tanks & maintenance straight. I did pull something like 6 filters off of tanks earlier tonight, sponge filters are cycling in, most of the power filters should be gone in a week or so. I'll be running most everything off of one air pump that draws 60 watts. Electric rates are going up, that pump should pay for itself in about a year. :good:

On my 1000 litre tank there are 4 external filters, all rated at 600 litres each, this way if one goes u/s there is always back-up

If you filter with 1 filter, even if it is of a higher rating, if it goes A over T you still end up with NO filtration

2 smaller filters are a better bet than one large one

Steve :)

i like to have at least 2 filters in each tank just in case
30g has 2 x fluval 2+s
80g has 1 x fluval 4+ and 1 x aqua clear 3 + 1 x eheim 2252
100g has 2 x eheim 2217s + 1 eheim 2252

I use no standard filters at all. Only filters in use are empty of media and are to provide circulation only.

My large tank has a sump system, and all my other FW run off a cnetralised wet dry sump system.

All the SW rely on LR, DSB and some skimmers to filter.

Me too  doesn't really matter what sort either.

I have a Juwel tank with it's own filter and a UGF
Another Juwel with it's own filter and a sponge filter
Mt 4 footer has an external rated for a tank twice the size, also a fluval 2+ and an eheim internal (similar size to the Fluval) and a double sponge filter (all there to keep cycled for using in a hospital/quarantine tank.
Mt angel tank has an external rated for a tank double the size and a fluval 2+
Even my betta has a corner box filter to go with the UGF

Just to be a real nerd, I am buying some battery powered air pumps (I always have 8-10 charged batteries ready), so if I have a powercut I can at least power the UGF + sponge filters for a while

belt and braces :good: If I ever get a fishroom, I will get a generator

the big tank has 2 externals (each could theoretically manage the tank by itself purley in terms of gallons of water) and 2 little internals for flossing the water, an extra bit of back up, and to ensure we have a spare cycled filter should we need to set the hospital tank up for any reason.

however that tank houses an common plec and an oscar so it's really needed, they're both young so i may need to increase this later.

ian's planted tank is very lightly stocked and havily planted which means he doesn't need so much filtration, he also needs to have not too much water movement so he just has 1 on there.

then the 2 little tanks are 5 and 8g so you couldn't really put 2 filters in there without loosing half the tank!! however we have a spare small filter kept cycled in oscars tank so if there was a problem it'd be transfered across straight away

then the marine tank is filtered by LR and plenty of turnover :)

On one o four 6ft tanks (hubbys) there are three externals, and one internal. On mine (180g) I have one (boo hiss I hear) external (FX5) and one internal just to push the water about a bit but with fine floss in to make the water even clearer (although...erm...it doesn't do it that well lol). But - before I get told off for only having one main filter on it, I do have a second planned for in a month or two. Another FX5 of course :D
