Right now I have one 30 gallon tank and one 50 gallon tanks each with three golden Dojo loaches in them. At one time I had 4 tanks but have slowly downsized because the maintenance was killing me. I used to have 7 - so in over a year I've only lost one loach. They appear to be very hardy creatures and they have become my favorite fish. Interestingly enough when I've placed an order for loaches I've ended up getting 2 larger loaches and one smaller. One of the small ones died when we had an accident in the tank while pouring water in and he was knocked unconscious.

I looked it up online somewhere and it said the MALE loaches are the smaller of the two sizes but both will reach a couple of feet long if they are in a tank where they have the room too. I thought that was interesting. Then I read in another location the the FEMALE loach is the smaller of the two dojo's. Finally I found a 3rd source that said most Dojo loaches will grow to 5-6" in a 30 gallon

Finally I found a 3rd source that said most Dojo loaches will grow to 5-6" in a 30 gallon aquarium and that the small loaches are actually a completely different species of dojo loach in case I wanted on of those and that the fin pattern determined the sex of the loachl I'm so confused even if they aren't - and wanted to see what anybody knows about golden Dojo loaches, My "smaller" ones arrived about 3" long and are now 5-6" long and about 1/2 the diameter as the larger loaches all of whom are now 8-10" long and very heavy bodied and about 3/4" in diameter. I can easily see me running out of tank room someday. I see no mating behavior but I'm not sure what to look for - they are a VERY affectionate fish especially to each other and will sleep on top of each other, slithered up next to each other to rest and then engage in some sometimes rough play (nobody gets hurt) - they are considerate of other creatures in the tank They like to nibble on our skin which basically just tickles. One of their games is to see if I can throw pellets in their mouthl I have heard on a youtube video they have swim bladders at each end of their body and can stay out of water 30 minutes. (NOT testing that one)

The large loaches rarely play with the small ones - so he/she tend to be on their own but never harrassed unless they are in the way of the bigger loaches. They eat HUGE quantities of food - the large ones consuming nearly a handful of flakes and up to 15 or so medium size pelletss. They go through large periods of activity followed by long naps. Naps to the point where you're sure they are dead until you give them a poke and they jump a mile highl

So is anybody here Dojo fans and know the truth about these cool fish? Below are some of them right after I got them playing with some other loach species so they are all very young and nearly all the same size. They all seem to enjoy getting the flow of water put out by a bubbler and ride it up to the top - jumping off and then swimming down to do it again.

Dojo/ weather loaches only grow to about 10-12 inches long. the biggest I have seen were about 10 inches.

Female loaches are bigger and fatter than males, which are smaller and slimmer.
