I'm wanting to keep coldwater in my bedroom in 4ft tank, how many can I keep in 4ft tank comfortably? :good:

i believe it's 20g for the 1st fish then 10g for every one after that, so if your tank is 55g then 4 goldfish would be enough. there's a calcualtor above to work out tank volume.
that's for goldfish. If you want something like mountain minnows then it would be a lot more fish.

If your going for coldwater "because its easier" its not, the only main difference is the temperature both need filters and regular maintenance. A 4ft tank would be nice for tropicals but if you want goldies because you like them go for it :good: But as above said with goldfish its 20g for first one and 10g for each after it and a big external filter because of all the poo :good:

no, i'm getting the 8fter for tropical and wanting to keep coldwater in my bedroom - just a smaller tank (4ft) just wondering how many common goldfish, shubunkins, etc i could keep?

Commons, shubunkins and comets are all single-tailed goldfish and all will outgrow a 4 foot tank. The smallest of them should easily reach a foot long and so would need a 6 foot tank. It is absolutely not unheard of for comets and commons to hit two foot long. In short - these are pond fish and should be treated as such.

If you wanted fancies, I'd say go for three. Many people will say 20 gallons for one . . . but I've seen a 10 inch long fancy goldfish in a 20 gallon tank and it is NOT a pretty sight. Three will look empty to start off with but with a good background, interesting plants, wood and rock work and three large, beautiful goldfish, it could look amazing.

Get a good filter - you'll need a large external for goldies.

Yes, like other animals that eat only plants, they have to move a much larger volume of organic plant material through their systems to extract the amount of chemical bond energy that would come from a smaller volume of higher energy animal protein. So the eat a ton of plants and drop very large volumes of waste.

Yeah, they poo a LOT.

You'd need a filter that can handle at least a 6 foot tank.
