How Intelligent Are Our Fish

Can You tell How Intelligent are Fish because Our fish know when the food is comming they will follow the Hubby when he have the food in his hand, they look up to the top of the tank water for the food. even if he just walks around the tank they will follow him, sometimes during their rest time we see them at the corner of the tank and watch the TV. they are Two Angel Fish and other fish in the tank too, they all know feeding time

Depends on the fish, my siamese fighters are always aware of what is happening outside of their tanks and often spend ages peering into adjacent tanks (most likely wondering how they can get the tasty morsals swimming around in the other tank ), the mob of guppies aren't incredibly bright most of them happily swim into nets or containers that I have put in their tank but don't necessarily want them in, my sparkling gouramis are cautious but curious about new developments, while my cory's just keep bumbling around as they always do blissful in their own little world of searching for food.

I agree about Fighters, I had the perfect example tonight.............my sister text me and asked if I'd fed Sammy (our "family" Siamese Fighter) today because my Mum said he kept "following" her around the kitchen and virtually staring her out. I hadn't fed him so yes, he must have known that those big blobs that move around outside his tank should have given him something lol.

Most of my fish seem intelligent My dempsy and the wifes two parrots come out at feeding time and stare at my wife till she brings them thier food. They all watche the peopel around the tank. My bichir swam over and laid in my hand a couple days ago I had it hanging in the water in kind of a j shape talking to my wife over my shoulder and felt him lay in my fingers when I looked back he was laying there he stayed about 10 seconds then swam away. I think he remembers me and does nto feel threatened he always swirls around the vac tube when I do water changes as well. My lobsters of course are clever wee beasties I have to trick them to catch them The female knows when I am giving her food and I can lay it directly in front of her. I hope to hand it to her some day. (accidently set an algea wafer on her head once.)

As everyone else said, fighters are smart little gits, they know who brings the food and who doesn't and they get plenty grumpy and sulky when you change the tank round or annoy them with the gravel vac

Most if not all of my fish know when feeding time is - on my old tank I used to feed them immediately after putting the lights on, and after a while as soon as the lights came on they were all crowding round the top begging.

Most if not all of my fish know when feeding time is - on my old tank I used to feed them immediately after putting the lights on, and after a while as soon as the lights came on they were all crowding round the top begging.

I think oscars win in the grumpy stakes when it comes to rearranging their tank or worse cleaning their tank. My sisters two oscars would sulk for days after any changes to their tank. They would glumly sit on the bottom of their tank and stead fastly ignore you (normally as soon as they saw you they where interested in case you where about to give them a treat), and would at times even go on hunger strikes.

The interesting thing is even different species of shrimp are smarter than others. My cherry shrimp are blissfully unaware of most things happening around their tank while the two types of native shrimp I have are fascintated in seeing what's happening in and around their tanks. They even come over to scrutinse me while I am busy watching them . I also have some empire gudgeons and even though these guys are wild caught they very quickly have come to recognise me and come to the front of the tank everytime they see me, hoping for another hand out of food.

Every time I open the door to my fish cupboard, there is a swarm of fish underneath the feeding flap. It doesn't matter if it's not food that I've got out, they just know that if I go to the cupboard, sometimes they get fed.

i believe the smartest fish i have owned are oscars

they know how to take apart spraybars

work together to push a heavy piece of wood out of their spawning area

people have even taught them how to play football and ring a bell when they are hungry

Oscars win hands down IMO, both on intelligence and being grumpy. My Oscar moves rocks, wrecks the tank, sulks, pulls off the spray bar, pulls off the heater suction cups and makes a HUGE splash if I open the lid whilst he's in a grumpy mood. He doesn't like water changes and will sulk the whole day after a water change but will interact with me when I'm using the vac, swimming so close to my hands that he rubs up against me, does this the whole time doing a water change.

There could be a more intelligent fish out there but I've never come across them.

tiger barbs are really friendly mates, they greet you whenever you are near the tank, whoever it may be all seven of them are like HELO HElO HELLOo HElo HELLooo ,, really fun to watch.

I normally drop the food into the path of the powerhead so it gets blown around the tank for the Kribs to chase about. As soon as i open the flap they swim to the opposite end of the tank and wait for the powerhead to send the food their way

My Jewel is really smart. When I would see her try and go after one of her tankmates, or see her flare, I would put my finger tip on the glass and point at her. He fins would go down and it was almost like she was sulking. Kinda like when you bust your dog digging in the trash lol.

I like the think that my livebearers are smart (I know they are kinda thick though.) I don't really know if they are that intellegent, but I do know they feel a lot of emotion. I can honestly say that I think they can experience love. I had a MM Platy male and a velvet wag female. They were always together. He guarded her when she had babies, and was always with her. When the female died, the male got really depressed, quit eating and what not. He died a week later. Water parameters were 0,0,20
