just curious really (plus extremely bored haha), i have a 22 gallon tank 36x12x15 LxWxH but if i dont include the inches my sand takes up its really 36x12x12 making it 19 gallons.

What do you do? :)

If you believe the numbers they put on a tank, you also include the volume of the glass itself. If you just want to talk about your tank using the kind of numbers used to designate a tank's size, it would be called a 28 gallon in the US. If you want the volume for a water treatment or for using medications, it is a 21 US gallon with the substrate in it. You will see people here post that they have a 28 gallon tank and you have the one they are talking about. I have a 29 which holds about the same amount of water but is taller and not quite as long.

Crikey, you have 3" of substrate.

In anycase the water space between the substate accounts for at least half the depth.

You are right. You measure from the top of your sand to the top of your water that's how much water you have so that is the real volume. They you have to think about how much water is displaced by rocks and wood. So your 20 gal is more like 17 gal.
