How Do You Clean New Sand

Im wanting sand in my new shrimp set up, I looked at some today and it says clean it before use. How do you do this, as its small unlike gravel

Put the sand in a bucket, fill with water, give the sand a stir, and pour off all the 'gunk'. Do this over and over, being ruthless about pouring away any lighter particles, even if it means you lose a bit of good sand along with it. Continue until the water runs clear and everything in the bucket sinks after a few seconds.

It does take a while, but it's better to spend the time washing it in the bucket than risk it clouding your tank and clogging your filter

I did this with my sand and now there is foam at the top of my tank.....did I not wash well enough or could something have gotten into the tank?

i washed mine a heap like fluttermouth said, mine still clouded a little, but it settled overnight and have had no problems with it since

You didn't wash it well enough, sorry! A few large water changes should sort it out though.

I'll get to work on that. Thank you. I'm trying to set this tank up for my Betta. And it is not going as planned. I will keep on the water changes and see if I can get his home going.
