How Big A Tank For A Bn Pleco And 6 Tetra

Hi, Im asking this on behalf of a friend who wants to get into tropical fish keeping and has fallen in love with my BN pleco.

He wants to keep 1 BN pleco and around 6 tetra or similar fish that will give his tank some show, rather than having one little fish feeding on the bottom and nothing else!!

What is a reasonable size tank should he buy to house these fish? I will be helping him look after the fish, so the filter will be cycled etc and water changes will happen.

I would say a good starting size to be a 20 or 29 gallon in my personal opinion. 10G is to small for for most fish such as tetra and pleco as they need space to grow or they are to active for such a small space. for a 2G you could have a goood sized shoal of tetra 12+, a BN pleco and some form of bottom feeders like Corydora. Just my personal opinion.

A bristlenose pleco should have at least a 3 ft tank. So if your friend wants the smallest tank he can have, then I would say a 90*30*30 cm. In that, he would be able to have one male and one female bristlenose, as well as 15-20 tetras of one species (they would really benefit form a larger group).

The important fac tis BN plecs can reach 8", mine was testament to that. Females are smaller, but if you want males get bigger, with far more bristles! Makes them big and ugly, but beautifull fish. If that makes sense.

So yes, a 3ft is a good general starting point for a BN.

3ft would be a good size tank for a show tank.
