Okay, so I've been preparing a couple for the last few weeks and today all of the elements were in place. I used my green hm pk male and a dorsal-less female pk borrowed from Rynoah. Here are some bad pictures.
And the water is colored from the Betta Spa, not my fishkeeping habits.
So now the male is alone with the eggs and he's not doing much with them. Of course there's not much to do since they aren't falling out of the nest or anything. I just hope he doesn't eat them! I'm trying to keep an eye on him without frightening him into eating the eggs.
Anyway, I'm excited to see what fry come from this spawn! Just thought I'd share.
Great pics of the embracing there. Some males can't leave the eggs alone, constantly mouthing them and some will just sit till they need to do something. Lets hope he doesn't get the urge to eat
Yeah, I've been worried about that whole eating the eggs thing! So far I've seen a couple fall out of the nest and he's just put them back so let's hope he just keeps doing that!
EDIT: Okay, many of the eggs hatched. With the aid of my magnifying glass, I was able to get some pictures. They aren't the best pictures in the world, but here they are . . . pics of newly hatched betta fry.
So there they are. I had to remove dad as he began eating some fry (I'm not sure if it was an accident or out of frustration because they kept falling). I've lowered the water level to about 2 inches from the bottom. The fry are able to swim back up to the top if they fall down so I'm hoping they'll be okay without dad . . . well they may be eaten WITH dad so I really didn't have much choice. I've covered the top with plastic wrap to keep the heat and moisture in so their first breath will be moist and warm (if they make it that long). I'll keep updating and let you know how it goes.
Well, they are still swimming up and floating down this morning. Some have managed to get to the edges of the tank and others are on the java moss. I counted 12 along the edges of the tank but I'm sure there are more that I couldn't see.
